The Saturna Island Local Trust Committee approved a three-year Temporary Use Permit for SA-TUP-2020.1, amended to require the applicant to prepare and present operational and decommissioning plans within six months of the permit’s issuance.[1]

The committee’s minutes record that residents raised questions about the project’s jurisdiction, effects on residents, the environment and wildlife, and whether geotechnical, operating and decommissioning plans had been prepared.[1]

The applicant said the project was part of a federal undertaking by Transport Canada and that work had been done with required federal and provincial approvals.[1]

The applicant also said the Transport Canada contract was expected to expire in 2023, that an extension was hoped for, and that equipment operation would be noise-free, with data collected every two weeks.[1]

The committee noted that a temporary-use permit can include site-specific monitoring and follow-up conditions, and that the project could help assess noise impacts from marine traffic.[1]
