Room for the people
who make island life work.

A home for a family. A place for a new worker. A future for our island. The census helps show who lives here and which households need help.

The middle age

21.7 years older
than BC.

Saturna trust area64.5 years
British Columbia42.8 years

Median age means the middle age. It was 64.5 here and 42.8 across BC in 2021.

Older people move here by choice. Families also face housing costs. These figures do not show how much each cause matters.

People in this trust area

The census count in 2021. It uses the local trust area’s boundary.

The middle household income

$66,000

Before tax, in 2020 dollars. This is income for a whole household, not one person’s pay.

Households that need housing help

A figure kept private

A home falls short on cost, space or repair. The household also cannot afford a suitable local home. The source uses a cost limit of 30% of income before tax.

This measure covers eligible households. It does not count each resident as a separate household.

What households were paying

$695per month

Average shelter costs in the 2021 Census. Some owners have no home loan left to pay.

This is not the price of a home or a new rental. It does not show what a new family would pay to move here today.

Different islands. Different incomes.

The published middle household incomes range from $34,800 on Lasqueti to $78,500 on Salt Spring. The source keeps some areas’ figures private.

These results do not support a claim that all Trust islands are worse off. We advocate more room for homes and local work. The figures show differences; they do not measure what the Trust caused.

Sources and how to read the figures

These are historical census figures. We have not raised them with inflation. Income is from 2020; population, age and shelter figures are from the 2021 Census.

The source uses local trust areas. These can include nearby islands. Do not mix them with other census boundaries. The figures alone cannot compare life before and after the Trust began in 1974.
